Everything has been resolved from what appeared as a system crash on Thursday evening. Maria O’Connell, community and relations director, notified users at 8:45pm EST that there was a system problem involving with the site’s PHP core, which generates most of the pages on this site. The result of the crash was because there were many people on the site causing many executions of the PHP core. “This problem is pretty common with PHP,” said Anthony Zaragoza. “Even Facebook, the popular social networking website, uses the same PHP cores and scripts as we do and they also have the same problem that we had today from time to time.”
What caused most of the execution problems was with the advertisements. We successfully rebooted the servers and software and put the site to sleep mode until we resolved the issue. Sleep mode is a special feature programmed in the site to stop all PHP executions for upgrades, maintenance, or backing up. “It took us around two hours to resolve the issue,” said Anthony Zaragoza. “The site would start running smoothly then it will start displaying internal server error messages. With those messages, we then knew where the problem lied since our end we got the complete error message that can’t be displayed for guest users. Then after the fifth time of fixing errors we finally got everything working again and it turned out that there were to many executions being performed by over a hundred multiple users.”
“It is a good sign that many people are accessing the site, and we will perform any upgrades to handle more users at one time,” Anthony added. The last site crash happened in April 2006 which lasted for about 4 days because the administrators were unsure the actual cause of the problem was and Zaragoza refused to open the site up again before the issue was resolved.
We’ve been experiencing some problems with our PHP database for the last few days which we are investigating right now. PHP is the software and database used to generate the pages, including this blog, throughout this website. “We believe it was caused by an execution of a script that caused the database to slow down.” So from time to time, you will encounter an error called “Error 500 - Internal Server Error.” Just because the site is not working doesn’t mean we are not live on the air, if you need to listen, click the listen live link on the error page or go to http://listen.wrajradio.com in browser’s address bar.
We are performing tools to repair the issue, which will cause the site to go down from time to time. Stay tune to the WRAJ Internet Radio blog for the latest updates.
WRAJ Internet Radio is getting a “ready” signal from gereral manager Anthony Zaragoza as Noel passes by eastern Long Island on Saturday. In which the “ready” signal means we have done various tests and cleanup in our studios in case of a flood. However, the storm is expected to cause downed power lines which could be a problem for us broadcasting. “Winds are expected to be between 40-60mph with heavy rain,” said Anthony Zaragoza. So, there might be buffering issues when listening, and possibly a long period of dead air because of a disconnection from our ISP.
If anything comes up, we will post it in this blog.
After nearly 5 months of releasing our high-definition version of our website, we were unable to put the new HD look and feel on the blogs on wrajradio.com because the blogs are stored on a different webserver. And now that trouble is over, Anthony’s Blog and the WRAJ Internet Radio blog has the high-definition look and feel. We did have problems with the RSS feeds on both blogs so your RSS reader might be unable to read it for a few hours.
The network at the offices of WRAJ and Jenthony have been upgraded to a full 1000 MBPS network from a 100 MBPS on Sunday night. This means that instead of replacing a typical router that we do nearly every other year, we want to take the advantage of building the next generation small business network. Not only our router was replaced, but three brand new 1000 MBPS switch have been installed to expand the network. All of our computers also had new ethernet cards installed to take the advantage of the 1000 MBPS to share files across the office instantly, including the WRAJ Internet Radio Broadcasting Computer. “We noticed a big difference once when we flipped the switch,” said Anthony Zaragoza, general manager of WRAJ Internet Radio. “I was able to load up a 300 MB network file in just a second, compared to our original network that took around 10 seconds.”
Since we are using new technology at our headquarters, you might experience problems on the station for the next few days. This includes short drop outs (buffering), and might get disconnected. We hope to have everything set by the end of the week, we will post when all system configurations are complete.
Some old network parts are still being used at the office, including an old switch by our TV to have the internet connected to our AppleTV, Wii, Gamecube, Playstation 2, and XBox. Other parts not being used in the office will be used as a backup or will be donated to local schools.
We are having some internet connection problems that might continue. As of now, we have resolved the issue but we are unsure if the problem will go on again later.
We are currently experiencing buffering issues with our High-Speed and Low-Speed streams. If the stream is skipping for you, try using the medium speed stream which is not experiencing buffering issues.
There were many problems for us on Wednesday with our internet connection, the cause was a EF2 tornado that touched down in Brooklyn. “Our internet connection goes right through Brooklyn,” said Anthony Zaragoza, general manager of WRAJ Internet Radio. “Our route to our streaming server goes to Islip, to Brooklyn, to Manhattan, and then it goes to Chicago or New Jersey, which is where our streaming servers are located.”
As of now, WRAJ Internet Radio is still continuing to feel the aftermath of the storm. There is still low bandwidth, due to the low resources of connections in Brooklyn, which is why we might continue to go in and out from time to time.
WRAJ Internet Radio’s parent company, Jenthony Enterprises, Inc., is expecting to change internet service providers by January 2008. “Basically, we want to a seperate internet line for our streaming servers so there won’t be interuption [buffering issues], especially when we are planning to open three more streaming channels by 2009.”
Jenthony is trying to get the new Verizon FiOS internet service that was introduced on Long Island early last year. Instead, Jenthony and Verizon is trying to get a permit from the Town of Islip to install the new cable line on the company’s street. However, the process is taking longer than we thought.
Anthony noted that the installation might take place by November and our first day to use the new service will be on December 1. But the new service may not be FiOS, instead our original provider might be used.
